How to Set Up Google Analytics for Your Website
Set up Google Analytics (GA4) step by step, including Webflow setup, key events and privacy basics, so you can see what visitors actually do on your site.
To set up Google Analytics, create a GA4 account and property, add a web data stream with your website address, and copy your Measurement ID. Add that ID to your website (in Webflow it goes in Site settings under Apps & integrations), publish, then check the Realtime report to confirm visits are coming through.
Google Analytics helps you understand who visits your website, how they interact with it, and what you can do to improve their experience. Setting it up is easy, and this step-by-step guide will show you how.
Why Use Google Analytics?
With Google Analytics (GA4), you can track:
- How many people visit your site
- Where your visitors are from
- How they found your site (search engines, ads, social media, etc.)
- Which pages are most popular
- How users interact with your content
- Key events, like enquiry form submissions, bookings and sign-ups
This data helps you make better decisions for your website and marketing efforts.
Step 1: Create a Google Analytics Account
- Go to Google Analytics and sign in with your Google account.
- Click Start measuring. If you already use Analytics, click Admin > Create > Account instead.
- Enter an account name (e.g., your business name).
- Choose your data sharing settings and click Next.
Step 2: Set Up a Property
- Enter a property name (e.g., your website name).
- Select your time zone and currency.
- Click Next.
- Choose your business category and size.
- Click Next, select your business objectives, then click Create.
Step 3: Set Up a Data Stream
- Choose Web (for a website).
- Enter your website URL and name the data stream.
- Keep Enhanced Measurement enabled to track key interactions.
- Click Create stream.
- Copy your Measurement ID. It starts with G- and you'll need it in the next step.

Four Questions. Two minutes
Step 4: Add Google Analytics to Your Website
How you add the tracking depends on your website platform. If your site is on Webflow, you don't need to touch any code:
- Open your project and go to Site settings.
- Click Apps & integrations and scroll to Google Analytics.
- Paste your Measurement ID (the G- code) into the field and click Save changes.
- Publish your site. The tracking only goes live on the published version.
On other platforms, follow the on-screen instructions Google gives you for your platform.
A Quick Note on Privacy and Consent
Australia has no specific cookie banner law, but check whether the Privacy Act applies to you and mention Google Analytics in your privacy policy. EU or UK visitors may also mean a consent banner and Consent Mode. More in whether your website needs a cookie pop-up.
Step 5: Check If Tracking Is Working
- Open Google Analytics and go to Reports.
- Click Realtime to see live visitor activity.
- Visit your website on another device to confirm your visit appears in Analytics.
If no data appears, double-check the tracking code, make sure the site is published and wait a few hours.
Step 6: Set Up Key Events (Optional, but Worth It)
To track important actions like form submissions (Google now calls conversions "key events"):
- Go to Admin and, under Data display, click Events.
- Click Create event and define what you want to track (for example, a visit to your form's thank-you page).
- To count it as a key event, go to Admin > Key events and click New key event.
- Enter the event name exactly as you created it and save.
Step 7: Connect Google Analytics to Other Tools
For deeper insights, link Google Analytics with:
- Google Search Console: monitor SEO performance
- Google Ads: measure the success of paid ads
- Google Tag Manager: manage all your tracking codes in one place
Go to Admin, find Product links under your property settings, and follow the steps. (Tag Manager is the exception: you add your GA4 tag inside Tag Manager.)
Google Analytics gives you powerful insights to improve your website and marketing. Follow this guide to set it up and start using data to grow your online presence.
